An inspirational careers event for Brighton school students was held by LoveLocalJobs.com and facilitated by social enterprise, Humanutopia, on Thursday April 16, 2015 at the American Express Community Stadium (AMEX) in Brighton.
‘Be the Change’ was the first event of its kind in Sussex and helped inspire around 100 students from schools across Brighton & Hove about their future. It was aimed at Year 10 pupils (15 years old) who, for one reason or another, have become disengaged with school or lack confidence in their own abilities.
The students took part in workshops and group activities led by Humanutopia’s founders, Carlo Missirian and Graham Moore, both former teachers who understand the challenges facing young people today. Issues such as bullying, poor behaviour and building inner confidence were discussed, helping the young people to value both themselves and others around them.
The idea for ‘Be the Change’ came from Gary Peters, Founder of LoveLocalJobs.com. He said: “It was a very powerful day, bringing together young people with business volunteers from across Sussex to raise career aspirations and demonstrate the skills and mind-sets required to be the best you can be in whatever career you choose or find yourself in.
“What made the day particularly successful was the way Carlo and Graham from Humanutopia facilitated the whole event. They made it into an interactive and engaging experience, focussing on the importance of personal qualities as well as qualifications. They demonstrated that whoever you are and whatever your background, you really can be successful so long as you put your mind to it.”
Volunteers from the business community were central to the activities, playing the role of mentors to small groups of students. The experience was designed to open the young people’s eyes to the world of work and the wealth of the possibilities and career opportunities in Brighton and beyond.
The organisations involved included the event sponsors, Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, Coast to Capital, IT First, American Express and Sodexo along with representatives from LoveLocalJobs.com’s founding partners and business contacts from across Sussex. Three of the participating business organisations, Sussex Police, IT First and Cobb Digital, have subsequently offered work placements to students who attended.
Mr Peters added: “I’d particularly like to thank the sponsor and business volunteers for taking part in this amazing event and making it so memorable for everybody involved. Thanks to this support from the local business community over 100 local young school students are now much better equipped for the world of work and inspired to be the best they can possibly be, regardless of the challenges they face along the way.”
Be the Change is the first of a series of similar events that will roll out across Sussex. Businesses who would like to find out about getting involved can contact Rose Farrar at Rosanna@lovelocaljobs.com
